Martin Tankleff freed after almost 18 years in jail

Martin Tankleff has been freed after family members posted $1 million bail on Thursday. The now 36-year-old was convicted in 1990 for the murder of his parents, Arlene and Seymour Tankleff. Only 17 at the time of his parent’s death and his arrest, Tankleff was put in prison where he has stayed until today.

Tankleff has always maintained his innocence. The couple were found in their Long Island home beaten to death.

 

Upon his release from Suffolk County jail, Tankleff thanked all who helped him be freed from jail. “If my arrest and conviction was a nightmare, this is a dream come true,” he said. He added that he wanted to thank “all my friend and supports, in Suffolk County and across the nation and literally around the world, for your interest and for making my fight your fight.”

 

The Appellate Division if State Supreme Court in Brooklyn overturned his convictions on Friday after citing new evidence that points to several ex-convicts as being responsible for the murders. Prosecutors say they plan to retry Tankleff.
