Former Boxing Champ Edwin Valero Commits Suicide Following Murder Charge

Edwin Valero, the former WBA super featherweight and WBC lightweight boxing champion from Venezuela, committed suicide on Monday morning, hanging himself in his jail cell just hours after being arrested for murdering his wife.

Valero reportedly used his own clothing to hang himself from a bar inside his cell, a cell he had been placed in after he allegedly admitted to killing his 24-year-old wife, Jennifer Viera. Her body was found inside a Valencia hotel room on Sunday, a room she shared with her husband.

Valero had a history of trouble with the law including a number of arrests related to domestic violence and assaults. That aggression paid off in the boxing ring as he built a 27-0 record including a then record 18-0 start with 18 first round knockouts.
