Iraqi PM and U.S Officials Confirm Deaths of Two Key Leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki and U.S. officials have confirmed that two key leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq have been killed in a joint operation carried out by the two countries.

Maliki announced the deaths of Abu Ayyub al-Masri and Abu Omar al-Baghdadi on national television, saying the pair had been killed in Salaheddin province. Both men had been traced to a home in the province and after ground forces destroyed the house the bodies of the two men were discovered.

Al-Masri had become the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq following the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in 2006 and was believed to be responsible for a number of deadly attacks targeting Iraqi as well as international forces.

The deaths of al-Masri and al-Baghdadi were called by US Forces-Iraq Commander Gen Raymond T Odierno as “potentially the most significant blow to al-Qaeda in Iraq since the beginning of the insurgency.”
