Ousted Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in Belarus

The whereabouts of ousted Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev are now known as the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has confirmed the former leader is in his country.

Bakiyev had initially flown to Kazakhstan after being forced from office during a violent uprising earlier this month but on Monday officials in the country revealed he had left. On Tuesday Lukashenko announced Bakiyev, along with four of his family members, had been welcomed into Minsk as guests.

Lukashenko stated that Bakiyev “is with us under the defense of our state and president.” He went on to tell state media reporters “If the president of Kyrgyzstan and his family need support and assistance at this difficult time, it will be shown in Belarus.”

Bakiyev was forced from office on April 7 and retreated to the south of the country to try and rally support. That attempt failed and he opted to leave the country and fly to neighboring Kazakhstan.
