Legendary Rap Star Guru Dies from Cancer at 43

Legendary rap star Guru, co-founder of the influential Gang Starr group, has died at the age of 43 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

 

Guru joined forces with DJ Premier in 1985 to create Gang Starr, releasing six studio albums and developing what became known as “conscious rap.”

 

Guru, born Keith Elam, and DJ Premier eventually split and he went on to perform with a number of musicians that included Herbie Hancock, Isaac Hayes, Macy Gray and the Roots.
