Turkey Offers to Mediate Between Iran and West Concerning Nuclear Program

Turkey has offered to step in and act as mediator for possible talks between Iran and the West as concern still exists over the intentions of Iran’s nuclear program.

While the West has insisted Iran was developing its nuclear program to produce nuclear weapons Tehran has dismissed those charges and continues to claim their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has gone as far as saying nuclear weapons were prohibited by religion but the West has shown little faith in those words.

The United States and several of their European allies have called for further sanctions against Tehran but Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said his country could help bring about a diplomatic solution to the problems that exist.

Turkey has backed Iran’s right to develop civil nuclear power but has made it clear it opposes all nuclear weapons programs in the region.
