Drugs commonly referred to as "rape drugs" are commonly abused in Michigan and can lead to further drug abuse. Many of these drugs are transported through Detroit as a distribution point for criminal groups. This link makes them all too common in Michigan.
Rape drugs are drugs primarily used for the intent of sedating someone to sexually assault them while unconscious. Narconon Freedom Center, a non-profit drug rehabilitation center, notes that abuse of this type of drug either giving or taking, commonly leads to other drug abuse as well. Although there are a number of perverse individuals who use these drugs for sexual assault, given their odorless, colorless and tasteless properties, far greater use may be in the intentional abuse of them at Rave parties.
According to the Michigan State Police, a "Rave" is a 12-hour dance party that used to be held anywhere such as an abandoned warehouse. However, Raves have become more mainstream and are now held at teen dance clubs. These parties are promoted and advertised as drug and alcohol free, however, GHB, MDMA (Ecstasy) and other club drugs are often available as they are easily concealed.
Narconon explains that the drugs used at parties such as Raves are dangerous and can prove fatal. Ecstasy, for example, causes a dangerous increase in body temperature and can cause heart failure. It's also a hallucinogen that causes the person to get mixed up mentally with past incidents in his mind and as a result can cause permanent feelings of fear, sadness or other unwanted feelings that have nothing to do with the person's present life. 55% of those surveyed who had taken ecstasy had feelings of losing control, extreme suffering and fear.
Another date rape drug is GHB. This drug was outlawed after a 15 year old Michigan girl named Samantha Reid died from ingesting GHB that a classmate slipped into her soda. The law that labeled GHB a Schedule I drug, which means it has no acceptable medical use, is named in Reid's honor. However, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, GHB continues to be widely abused, largely being obtained from Canada by college students who transport it into the U.S.
Narconon Freedom Center offers effective drug rehabilitation from club drugs, prescription drugs and other abused substances. The Narconon New Life Detoxification program offers a way for the drug abuser to flush out the harmful toxins remaining after drug use from their body. The result of this program, which is part of the full Narconon program, is elimination of the cravings caused by drugs and clearer thinking.
The message to young people should be the truth about drugs, what their actual short and long-term effects are and the impact on personal health and well-being. Narconon provides this information for anyone who asks and even delivers drug education lectures.
