Nonja, World’s Oldest Orangutan, Dies at 55

The Miami Zoo has confirmed that Nonja, a 55-year-old Sumatra orangutan, died on Saturday.

Nonja was believed to be the world’s oldest orangutan. Sumatran orangutans are considered to be critically endangered with a population that ranges between 7000-7500 in the wild.

Born on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Nonja was moved to Miami in 1983 and was a major attraction at the city’s zoo.
