Soaring Eagles Spotted at Bed and Breakfasts!

American Bald Eagles are the most majestic of all birds, especially in flight when their wingspan can reach 8 feet. And at different times of the year you can watch them as they migrate in search of food, as they build their nests & feed their young, and then, as the latest generation takes flight, and the cycle begins again.  And what better way to admire America’s bird than by staying in one of the many bed and breakfasts throughout USA and Canada listed below where eagles are regularly sighted and where the innkeepers have the inside scoop plus a pair of binoculars as well as comfortable beds and tasty breakfasts!

Iowa Eagles & Iowa Hospitality
Innkeeper Joy Hanson of the Mason House Inn in Betonsport Iowa reports that “every winter they have a pair of eagles who nest in the tree across the street and fish in the river.” She chuckles as she tells of the Canadian Geese, who have also migrated in search of winter food, and how the eagles harass them and steal their fish. At their bed and breakfast though, the guest reigns supreme, and you will enjoy a cozy night’s sleep and a warm breakfast in the morning.

Sparkling Delaware River Attracts Eagles
Over 100 eagles migrate to the Upper Delaware River each winter, beginning about mid December, in search of fresh water and seasonal food supplies. About mid-March most of the eagles begin their return to their northern breeding regions, such as the Pacific Northwest. Staying at the Roebling Inn on the Delaware, you understand why the eagles are attracted to this clean, clear sparkling river, which winds its way through forested mountains. You can relax in a spacious room at this B&B with a view to the river or curl up in front of the fireplace.

Grumpy Old Men & Eagles
Or you may choose to follow the eagles to Minnesota where the Mississippi River is one of their choice winter haunts because of its splendid fishing. And your choice place to stay is at the Eagles on the River Bed & Breakfast in Wabasha, the town where the Grumpy Old Men film series was filmed. Here you enjoy country comforts as well as watching the eagles soar overhead, catching those rising columns of air called thermals.

Colorado B&B plus Eagles Nesting
If you would like to observe the eagles as they nest and the young ones emerge, then head to Winter Park Colorado and the Bear Paw Inn.  Innkeeper Susan says it is such a thrill to watch them being fed and growing. This bed and breakfast is located at 9200 feet in the Colorado Rockies, close to the bird preserve on Lake Granby. Sleep soundly in beds made from 300 year old Canadian pine logs and savor a full gourmet breakfast in the morning.

Fireworks in Maine & Eagles
Or head to Camden, Maine where there are no fireworks on the 4th of July so as not to disturb nesting eagles. Here at the Camden Windward Bed and Breakfast you can book a Champagne & Seafoam Package that includes a two-hour sail on Penobscot Bay and see a wealth of wildlife, from nesting eagles to seals and whales.

Baby Eagles in the Pacific Northwest
Innkeeper Lori at The Ocean Wilderness Inn in Sooke BC writes that they had the joy of watching two eaglets learn how to fly and hunt this year on their B&B property. What an awesome experience to watch nature from this serene retreat where your spacious room can overlook the old-growth forest or the ocean!

At the elegant Sooke Harbour House, another British Columbia treasure, you can delight in ocean views from every room, watching the eagles as well as the seals! An additional treat here is the restaurant on the premises that features fresh fish caught locally. Or stay next to the Olympic National Park at the luxurious Hidden Haven Bed and Breakfast located in Port Angeles in the state of Washington. Wake to a hearty breakfast before enjoying a day of nature trails and plethora of birds, including, of course, numerous eagles!

California to Georgia  to Maryland Eagle Sightings
Down the coast in California, is Eagle Inn which boasts nearby Lake Cachuma where from November to February eagles migrate and pontoon boat tours are available for only $15 a person. Santa Barbara bed and breakfast owner Paul says while the focus is on migratory eagles, there are often sightings of deer and coyotes too.

Innkeepers Jim and Tracy at The Inn at Mitchell House in Chestertown MD told us they often have an eagle sitting on their chimney of their bed and breakfast. Chesapeake Bay is close by and their magnificent estate sits on 12 manicured acres. Do take time to enjoy a grand country breakfast before heading out for your day’s activities.

Even owners Kim and Susan Egelseer at the Americus Garden Inn Bed and Breakfast in Georgia write that they have been watching a pair of eagles who have taken up residence this year. And while you visit, do sample their award winning pecan tarts!
