U.S. Coast Guard Continues Search of Gulf of Mexico for Missing Oil Workers Following Explosion on Drilling Platform

The United States Coast Guard is continuing their search in the Gulf of Mexico for at least a dozen oil workers who remain unaccounted for following an explosion on a drilling platform off the coast of Louisiana.

On Tuesday night a large explosion rocked the Deepwater Horizon, a semi-submersible rig located about 52 miles southeast of the port city Venice, and the fire that resulted continues to burn.

The majority of the 126 workers aboard the rig were rescued but at least seven were said to be badly injured and had to be airlifted to hospitals. Transocean, the Swiss-based contractor that owns the rig, also stated that at least a dozen oil workers remain unaccounted for and are the subject of the Coast Guard’s search.

There have been no reports on what caused the explosion.

An earlier report had suggested the U.S. Coast Guard had found the missing oil workers but they have not confirmed those reports.
