Police Dog Killed after Suspect Jumps off Bridge

A suspect being chased by police is recovering in a California hospital but could be facing some serious charges after he grabbed a police dog and jumped off the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in an attempt to escape a pursuing officer Monday night.

An Oceanside police officer had signaled the man to pull over after he was spotted driving his GMC pickup in an erratic fashion. The man refused and led the police on a chase where he eventually stopped his truck on the bridge.

The officer then released a German shepherd named Stryker who tackled the man. With seconds the man lifted himself off the ground with the animal in his arms and leapt off the bridge 200 feet and into the Pacific Ocean.

While the suspect survived the police dog was killed in the jump.
