As one of the top three Democrat candidates for the presidential nomination for president, John Edwards is also the recipient of some third party ads that a few other candidates claim are an attempt to circumvent election donation laws. Opponent Barack Obama recently pointed to the Alliance for a new America, a labor organization that is spending nearly a million dollars supporting Edwards' campaign.

Edwards points out that many candidates are the beneficiaries of the so-called 527 campaigns, operated by outside groups with no knowledge by or input from the candidates or their campaigns. Obama also slammed Edwards on his lack of action while he was serving as a North Carolina senator, and is taking advantage of the type of special interest funding he is constantly criticizing.
Edwards believes the recent attack by Obama is the result of recent polls in Iowa that show the race is still wide open and that Obama has lost a little traction in the race. The most recent American Research Group poll, conducted December 16 to 19 shows Edwards with 18 percent, Obama with 25 percent and Hillary Clinton at 29 percent.
However, according to the results posted at USAElectionPolls.com, a poll conducted December 20 to 23 shows Clinton at 34 percent, Obama dropping to 19 percent and Edwards in second place at 20 percent. Edwards, considered a populist presidential candidate who has the support of many labor groups, contends Obama's slip in Iowa was the spark that ignited the recent outburst. As the January 3 Iowa caucus rapidly approaches, it is still anyone's game to win.
