The Green Business League recently met with various leaders in the island of Puerto Rico to assist in the Greening of this "Green Island." Puerto Rico is an important area for Green business programs since it has limited resources and a high demand for goods and services. It is hoped that the encouragement of Green business practices will find broad reception in Puerto Rico. Of course, leadership in Green business is critical to the overall success.
Rennie Rodriquez, Norma Rodriguez, and R Michael Richmond met with Reinaldo Paniagua of the Federation of Mayors of Puerto Rico to discuss the involvement of Puerto Rican mayors in an education and implementation project.
The proposed goal was to offer training to a member of each mayor's team as a Certified Sustainability Officer. These key people would be able to carry a highly-effective Green business program back to their communities.
The environmental effort is a "Universal problem that requires Universal participation," according to R Michael Richmond of the Green Business League. The Green Business League project is not as difficult as building Green buildings, but installing Green practices.
The proposed plan calls for scheduling a training session for one or more key people in each municipality, that provides a Certified Sustainability Office capable of assisting area businesses to follow Green practices as well. The ability to change the daily operation to better, Greener practices allows for any size business to join the environmental issue.
The development of Green concepts will also provide Green jobs throughout the island because of the new opportunities on many levels of Green implementation. When done properly, Going Green is a benefit on many levels.
Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with serious environmental issues. Power, water, and waste actually present a larger challenge than in the state. The ability to form a easily-transferrable Greening project is desperately needed to allow good business to blossom. The Green Business League believes that Puerto Rico can literally become a beacon of Green progress that will serve as a model to all other states and territories.
