Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has decided to resign from his position, informing King Albert of his decision on Thursday after his governing coalition collapsed when the Open VLD withdrew due to a disagreement concerning the rights of French speaking citizens living in Dutch-speaking areas near Brussels.
While Leterme offered his resignation the king did not immediately accept, leaving the possibility that he may ask the PM to form a new administration. If that were to fail Belgium would then hold elections.
The fall of Leterme is directly tied to the government’s inability to find a solution to issue of Dutch speaking communities refusing to allow French speakers from moving in to their towns. The Dutch speakers have said they want to maintain their Flemish identity, a contention that has been supported by the Flemish liberal party, Open VLD.
Open VLD has said they have no confidence in the government’s ability to find a solution to the problem and as a result they have withdrawn.
Leterme’s decision will likely affect the scheduled parliamentary debate concerning a law that would ban full-face Muslim veils from being worn in public.
