Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Zimbabwe Despite Protests of MDC Party

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has arrived in Zimbabwe to hold talks with President Robert Mugabe despite protests from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC party.

Ahmadinejad was invited by Mugabe to open a trade fair in Bulawayo on Friday, a move that the MDC said will only further the divide between Zimbabwe and Western nations. Zimbabwe is already dealing with a number of sanctions due to Mugabe’s policies as leader of the country and the MDC has said his relationship with Ahmadinejad could create more.

The MDC labeled Ahmadinejad a “war-monger, a trampler of human rights [and] an executioner.” Iran is currently under a number of sanctions due to their nuclear program and those sanctions could be expanded as Ahmadinejad has been less than cooperative with UN demands.

Tsvangirai had been scheduled to travel to Europe for talks about lifting the sanctions but he has been delayed due to the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption last week. The arrival of Ahmadinejad isn’t going to help those talks any as the MDC stated “Hob-nobbing with dubious political leaders confirms stereotypes that we are a banana republic.”

Ahmadinejad’s trip will almost certainly draw the eye of the West as Zimbabwe is believed to have uranium deposits in the north but no contracts for exploration have been awarded. Iran is thought o be in the market for uranium, something necessary for their nuclear program.
