SouthWest Water Company (NASDAQ:SWWC) has announced that it has received two awards from the National Safety Council (NSC). The awards received include The Significant Improvement Award and an Occupational Safety and Health Award in Texas. The awards are granted in recognition of companies that have demonstrated a 20% minimum of reduction in injuries and illnesses involving days away from work. SouthWest Water has reduced its Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) by 49% throughout 2009. It’s LTIR has been reduced to 0.53 incidents per 200,000 hours worked. The LTIR industry average is 1.70.

SouthWest Water Company (SouthWest Water) operates and maintains water and wastewater infrastructure. Through its operating subsidiaries, the Company owns 144 systems and operate hundreds more under contract to cities, utility districts and private companies. During the year ended December 31, 2009, the Company was organized in four segments: Utilities, Texas Utilities, O&M Services and Texas MUD Services. Its owned water and wastewater utilities are referred to as its Utilities operations. At December 31, 2009 the Company had approximately 109,000 active water connections and 21,000 active wastewater connections. Approximately 95% of its connections are to residential customers. In December 2008, the Company completed the sale of its wholesale wastewater business. The Company sold its New Mexico utility in May 2009. The Company sold assets of its Southwest Environmental Laboratories, Inc. on April 1, 2009.
