Man Sought in Meredith Emerson Disappearance

Police initially thought Meredith Emerson got lost while hiking in North Georgia Mountains with her black Labrador retriever, but now officials say they are looking for a “person of interest” in her disappearance. The 24-year-old Colorado woman was last seen New Years Day hiking on the Freeman Trial on Blood Mountain.

Emerson was reported missing on Wednesday. Witnesses say a “weathered” looking man with “bad dental” talked to the 24-year-old several times. Investigator Kimberly Verdone said the man, between 50 and 60 years, was wearing a sheath on his leg but it is unclear what was in it.

According to an eyewitness, the man “looked as if he had been hiking for some time” as he was wearing a large backpack. He also had a “dark reddish retriever” with him whose name was Danny.

“We want to find out who he was and kind of talk to him and see what happened and what they conversation was throughout the day,” says Verdone.

Police and volunteers are searching for the blonde woman, who is described as “familiar with hiking.” A water bottle and leash belonging to Emerson was found in the area as well as her car.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
