Wave of Bombings Target Shia Areas in Baghdad, at least 58 People Killed, Several more Injured

A series of bombs detonated in Shia-dominant areas of Baghdad on Friday, killing at least 58 people and injuring more than 100.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks officials have already pointed their finger at al-Qaeda, saying the militant group was acting out of revenge for the recent killing of three senior leaders. Iraqi officials have also said al-Qaeda often targets Shia areas, making Friday’s bombings near mosques consistent with their past attacks.

As many as 13 bombs were detonated across Baghdad on Friday, all at near Shia mosques and during the time of prayer. A Shia market was also targeted in the blast as was the office of radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr.
