A U.S. court in Virginia will be determining the fate of eleven suspected Somali pirates facing charges of piracy, attacking vessels and assault and use of a firearm.
The suspected Somali pirates, captured by the U.S. Navy over the past month, have been held on U.S. ships off the coast of Somalia while the case was being prepared. They will now appear in the Virginia court, a move made after Kenya announced plans to end piracy trials.
Kenya had been hosting piracy trials but recently declared the burden of doing so shouldn’t fall exclusively on them as piracy was an international matter and an international court should be set up for the crime.
Five of the suspects due to appear in the Virginia court on Friday were apprehended after firing on a U.S. Navy ship while the other six were captured in the waters off the small state of Djibouti.
