Many people began discounting the presidential candidacy of Republican Fred Thompson since his delayed entry into the field. Waiting until September to announce his intention to run for the office, many political pundits say that Thompson gave voters the opinion that he was late in showing up because he was not sure he wanted to run. Additionally, up until the beginning of December, many believed he was not really interested in running for president due to an apparent lack of visible campaigning.
However, for two weeks prior to he Iowa Caucus, Thompson has been hard at work driving his campaign bus around the state of Iowa, drumming up support and letting Iowa voters know he is very much a candidate for president. Polls in Iowa and New Hampshire, according to results posted at usaelectionpolls.com show Thompson's polling has not improved over the past few weeks, despite an increase in campaigning.
Thompson is quick to point out that he left a very lucrative acting career to run for president, something he would not have done if he did not have a keen interest in the White House. His low key approach is similar to the one he used when ran successfully for the Senate in Tennessee and is likely to continue throughout the campaign.
While many of the top Republican candidates are continuing to push through Iowa with plans to hit New Hampshire following the caucus vote January 3, Thompson will follow suit, but may already be making plans for some of the larger delegate states slated for primaries on February 5.
