Convicted Killer, Ronnie Lee Gardner, Requests Death by Firing Squad

Ronnie Lee Gardner, a convicted murderer sentenced to death in the state of Utah, has requested execution by firing squad.

Utah has put to death just three men by firing squad since 1976, with the last such execution carried out in 1996. In 2004 state legislators removed the firing squad as a method of execution but for those sentenced to death prior to that decision it remains an option.

On Friday Gardner informed a judge “I would like the firing squad, please.” Obliging, the judge set an execution date for June 18.

Gardner, 49, was sentenced to death in 1985 after killing a lawyer outside a  Utah courthouse as he attempted to escape.
