Martina Hingis Tested Positive for Cocaine Wimbledon Wants Their Money Back

Martina Hingis, the famed tennis player, failed a doping test resulting in a two year ban.  The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced the news today.  She tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon, June 29.

The ITF stated “The Tribunal rejected the suggestion made on behalf of Ms. Hingis that there were doubts about the identity and/or integrity of the sample attributed to her.”  Hingis was found to have committed a doping offence as stated under Article C.1 of the program.

Hingis filed a plea of No Fault or Negligence since there was no way of showing how the cocaine was able to enter her body.  She still claims her innocence saying that she received a negative test result on a hair test.

Hingis will be banned from the sport as of October 1, however, the 27 year old athlete has announced her retirement.  All records of Hingis’ win at Wimbledon have been removed and she is expected to repay the $129, 481 she won at the event.

Winning 43 WTA singles titles before her 14th birthday, Hingis is a skilled and incredibly talented athlete.  She first retired in response to ankle injuries in 2003 but came back in 2006 to win titles in Kolkata, Rome and Tokyo.

Martina Hingis was given three weeks to appeal the ITF’s decision.
