Brian Nichols, Atlanta Murderer, Accused of Plotting Escape

Brian Nichols has been accused of planning another escape with the help of his girlfriend Lisa Meneguzzo, a paralegal, and at least two deputies. Nichols was charged in 2005 with the murder of four people in a downtown Atlanta courthouse.

He went on a shooting rampage while on trial for rape. Nichols killed the judge presiding over the case, a court reporter, a deputy, and a federal agent. The 36-year-old later surrendered after forcing his way into a woman’s apartment and talking with her most of the night.

Nichols was plotting to escape a Fulton County jail by cutting his way through cinderblock walls. He then planned to get into a waiting van and travel north to Meneguzzo’s home.

According to court documents, Nichols convinced the woman of going along with the plot by using his “charm.” He bribed jail employees with money.

Investigators say Meneguzzo, 38, said Nichols asked her to buy tools that would cut trough cinder block. She also provided letters in which Nichols described his escape plan. The Connecticut native also claims the paralegal, Tamela Hysten, had worked for Nichols defense team at one point and provided him with information about jail escapes.

Meneguzzo said one of the deputies, David Ramsey, flirted with her and she used that to her advantage to recruit his help with the plan. Ramsey soon resigned and another deputy that Hysten was dating took over Ramsey’s involvement. She said she paid the deputies for their help and the amount was usually $300 to $500 every four to six weeks.

Nichols murder trial has been put on hold. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. No charges have been filed yet for the planned jail break.
