Gang Hitmen Suspected in Shootout that Leaves Eight Dead in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

Mexican authorities believe a number of gang hitmen are responsible for a brutal ambush that left seven police officers and one bystander dead in the volatile city of Ciudad Juarez.

According to reports the police had been traveling in two vehicles and were stopped at an intersection when the gunmen opened fire from behind. Six federal officers and one local police officer were among the dead as was a 17-year-old boy who had been walking in the area.

A brutal war has been waged between drug gangs and Mexican troops in the city located just across the U.S. border. Gangs have expressed little fear in confronting police, often engaging forces in deadly shootouts.

Friday’s massacre on the streets of Ciudad Juarez has not been attributed to a single gang but a message on a downtown wall suggested the act was carried out by the La Linea gang, the enforcement arm of the Juarez drug cartel.

The Juarez cartel has been locked in a bloody territorial war with the Sinaloa cartel, led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Guzman was referenced in the message placed on the wall as it read “This will happen to you ... for being with El Chapo Guzman and to all the dirtbags who support him. Sincerely, La Linea.”
