Drug addiction is not new. Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis himself was a drug addict. What is it that makes someone a drug addict and why does someone become addicted to drugs? Narconon Georgia explains the science behind addiction.
Narconon Georgia is a non-profit drug rehabilitation and education organization. They have been freeing people from drug addiction for 9 years in Atlanta. Overall, Narconon has 120 centers worldwide and has been operating since 1966. One of the common questions they receive is, "Why doesn't someone just stop using drugs, don't they know it is ruining their lives?"
What may be evident to the onlooker is not evident to the drug addict. Simply put drugs are painkillers. They tend to numb all sensation and feeling, not just the undesired ones. This alone prevents the addict from being fully aware of his surroundings. However, there is a far more scientific process occurring when someone takes drugs.
When one takes drugs the person's own natural body chemicals, vitamins and minerals are burned up. Drug toxins and their residuals, called metabolites, are left behind after the body has tried to break down the drugs. These drug residues dissolve better in oil than water, and as such, they are attracted to the fatty (think oil) tissue in the body and so are stored there. These stored toxins can remain there for years. They can even be released again into the blood as fat is burned up causing drug flashbacks.
However, it gets worse, As the drug taker's natural body chemicals are used up by the drugs the drug metabolites begin to function as a substitute for the body's own chemicals. The body begins to rely on these substitute chemicals, the drug toxins, for it's vital functions. This alone causes damage to the body.
The addict may attempt to stop using drugs, but the body will demand more of the drug so it can produce more of the drug metabolites it is using in vital body functions. This produces intense physical and mental drug cravings prompting the addict to obtain and use more drugs.
Cravings are why a person on drugs does not respond to reason or discipline attempts. They are in a state where to the addict it feels as if life itself is dependant on obtaining and taking more of the drug. As would water to a man dying of thirst.
This is why people taking drugs continue to take them to the point of addiction. Most drug addicts arriving to the Narconon program are seriously malnourished and in poor health. This is caused by their drug addiction. The remedy is to supply the addict with proper nutrition and specific supplements that aid the body in detoxification. The Narconon New Life Detoxification program eliminates drugs cravings by flushing out the poisonous drug toxins and providing the proper nutrition to restore the person back to good health.
