After three of their vessels where approached by Iranian speedboats in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, U.S. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman warned
Whitman said that the incident, involving the USS Port Royal, a cruiser; the USS Hopper, a destroyer; and the USS Ingraham, a frigate, could have easily escalated into what he described as “appropriate action.” Whitman noted that the U.S. Navy felt the Iranians manning the five speedboats “showed reckless, dangerous and potentially hostile intent,” and were within moments of being engaged.
It is believed the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps were operating the vessels and not the Iranian Navy. The Revolutionary Guard is not under the supervision of the Navy. In March 2007 they were responsible for seizing 15 British personnel before releasing tehm two weeks later.
