Hungary’s Conservative Opposition Party Fidesz Earns Landslide Victory in General Election

Hungary’s conservative opposition party Fidesz has secured a landslide victory in the country’s general election, crushing the ruling Socialist party and setting up Viktor Orban to become prime minister.

The second round results showed a 68% vote count for Fidesz, totaling 262 of the 386 seats in parliament. That is a clear advantage over the Socialists who earned 15% and 59 seats.

With a two-thirds majority Orban and the Fidesz party, which ran on the promise of job creation, lower taxes and a smaller bureaucracy, has the opportunity to change the country’s constitution.
