A rally in Japan’s southern island of Okinawa attracted nearly 100,000 people, all calling for a U.S. military base situated in the middle of the island to be removed completely.
In 2006 the U.S. and Japan signed an agreement that would move the U.S. Marines’ Futenma base to the coast but demonstrators have refused to accept that plan.
Instead, demonstrators have called on Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama to honor his election pledge to remove the base completely, something he was shied away from since being elected. His hesitancy has led to a drop in his popularity and could be a major influence in how the upper house polls play out in July.
Nearly half the 47,000 American troops based in Japan are stationed in Okinawa.
