The USS Hopper, USS Port Royal and the USS Ingraham were nearly engaged in battle with five Iranian “fast boats” yesterday in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Defense Department.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman says the Iranian boats “showed reckless, and dangerous and potentially hostile intent” during the brief confrontation.
“I am coming at you; you will explode in a couple of minutes,” said the Iranian to the U.S. ships. The American vessels were “prepared to take appropriate actions” and issued warnings to the Iranians before they turned away.
The White House National Security Council also issued a warning to the Iranian boats saying, “We urge the Iranians to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future.”
The U.S. ships were able to continue with no violence after the 15 to 20 minute engagement. “We haven’t has an event of this serious nature recently,” added Whitman.
