Belgium’s King Albert Accepts resignation of PM Yves Leterme

Belgium’s King Albert has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Yves Leterme after the coalition government he headed collapsed when the Flemish liberal party, Open VLD, quit.

Leterme handed in his resignation last week after the Open VLD dropped out of the coalition because of the government’s inability to find a solution to issue of Dutch speaking communities refusing to allow French speakers from moving in to their towns.

The Dutch speakers have said they want to maintain their Flemish identity, a contention that has been supported by the Open VLD.

Leterme had previously offered his resignation on two other occasions but King Albert refused to accept but on Monday he opted to honor the request.
