The Philadelphia Phillies have signed their slugger Ryan Howard to a five-year extension, locking up the 2006 NL MVP through the 2016 season at an average of $25 million per season.
Howard’s $125 million deal will start next year, paying him $20 million in 2012 and 2013 and $25 million from 2014-2016. There is also a club option for 2017 worth $23 million with a $10 million buyout.
The 6-foot-4 Howard won the Rookie of the Year award in 2005 after hitting 22 homeruns and batting .288 in 88 games. In 2006 Howard hit 58 HRs, drove in 149 runs and finished with a .313 average.
