Gary Michael Hilton Prime Suspect in Cheryl Dunlap Murder

Gary Michael Hilton has been charged in the death of Meredith Emerson, who went missing while hiking in North Georgia Mountains, and is now named a prime suspect in the murder of Florida hiker Cheryl Dunlap.

Emerson went missing on New Year’s Day and several witness say they saw Hilton talking with her. He was arrested at a gas station in metro Atlanta after police found bloody clothes and ID’s belonging to Emerson in a garbage can at another gas station.

Hilton, 61, later told investigators where to find Emerson’s body inn exchange for a deal that would prevent him from receiving the death penalty. He has been charged with malice murder and is currently being held without bail.

Florida officials have named Hilton a prime suspect in the murder of Dunlap, whose body was found last month in Apalachicola National Forest. Hilton was in the area at the time the hiker was murdered because a forestry agent talked with him and wrote down his tag number.

Investigators say there are such similarities in the cases, that Hilton may be a serial killer. The similarities include both women were hikers and both were decapitated after death.

North Carolina officials are investigating whether Hilton is responsible for the murder of elderly couple, John and Irene Bryant, who were also hiking at the time of their death.
