India has arrested a woman who had been working as a diplomat in its Islamabad embassy, charging her with providing Pakistan with classified information.
The woman, 53-year-old Madhuri Gupta, had been working as a second secretary in the high commission and was involved in the press and information section. According to Indian authorities she had been providing documents to Pakistan’s ISI intelligence service.
Gupta was arrested four days ago while on a work trip to Delhi. She appeared in court on Monday and will remain held for another five days before any decision is made.
There has been a long mistrust between India and Pakistan and their relationship worsened following the 2008 attacks in Mumbai. India has blamed militants from Pakistan for the attacks and have suggested there may have been state elements involved. While Pakistan has admitted militants may have planned the attack on their soil there had been no official involvement in the November attacks that killed 174 people.
