Mexico Urges Nationals to Carry Documentation When Traveling to Arizona

In response to Arizona’s controversial immigration law Mexico has urged its nationals to carry proper documentation when traveling to the U.S. state, warning its citizens they would be subjected to a “negative political environment.”

As part of the new immigration law passed last week, due to go into effect in 90 days, police in Arizona will be required to question immigration status. If those questioned are unable to provide documentation proving they are legally allowed inside the United States they could be handed a six-month jail sentence and fined $2,500.

Reacting to the new law Mexico issued a travel warning to its residents encouraging them to “act with prudence and respect local laws.” The warning went on to say “As long as no clear criteria are defined for when, where and who the authorities will inspect, it must be assumed that every Mexican citizen may be harassed and questioned without further cause at any time.”

Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer signed the measure into law, saying it “protects every American citizen.”

While Brewer contends the law was designed to protect Americans it has been the focus of numerous protests within the state as well as abroad. President Barack Obama has condemned the law and it will almost certainly be the focus of his talks next month when he meets with Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon.
