Kenya Will be Seeing Scheduled Protests and Rallies Next Week
CNN reports that Kenya's oppositon party is calling for mass protests and more rallies next week over the African Union's failure to mediate the conflict started by the Kenya presidential election in December.
According to the Associated Press, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will be holding rallies in over 20 different locations Wednesday through Friday. They quoted Anyan Nyongo, ODM secretary-general, saying "Kenyans are entitled to protest peacefully at this blatant violation of their fundamental rights."
Two of the group's public meetings were canceled due to the government troops' forceful arrival.
Since President Mwai Kibaki beat Raila Odinga, restoring his titile as Kenya's president, hundreds of people have died in protests and riots againts the election results. The ongoing violence has only reignited tribal rivalries setting the Kikuyu tribe (Kibaki) and the Luo tribe (Odinga) against eachother.
International monitors have noted irregularities in the casted votes.
UN Secretary-General Kof Annan will be taking over for African Union chairman and the president of Ghana, John Kufuor to mediate the dispute. Kufuor left Kenya with no resolution.
