When the NHL playoffs began the Washington Capitals were considered a lock to get past the Montreal Canadiens and move on to the second round. After dropping their first game the Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals bounced back and rattled off three straight wins and that second round berth looked certain.
Montreal wasn’t quite ready to see their season end though as they took Game 5 in D.C. 2-1 and then Jaroslav Halak stopped 53 shots in Game 6 to even the series at 3-3. The Capitals last chance to advance will be in their Game 7 and while the game will be on their home ice that hasn’t exactly been an advantage so far.
Twice the Canadiens have earned wins on Washington’s ice and they very nearly won Game 2 but the Caps managed to force overtime and earn the win. Washington came into the playoffs as the top team in hockey with their #1 seed and ready for a Stanley Cup title but if they don’t figure out a way to get the puck past Halak on Wednesday they’ll have a long offseason to think about a failed season.
