Barrick Gold Corporation (USA) (NYSE:ABX) surges 2.66% to $41.75. The company reported adjusted first quarter net income of US$741 million or US$0.75 per basic share, versus US$298 million or US$0.34 per basic share in the last year quarter, reflecting higher production and sales in conjunction with lower total cash costs and higher realized prices for both gold and copper.

AFLAC Incorporated (NYSE:AFL) gains 2.98% to $53.97. The company said late Tuesday that it generated net income of $636 million, or $1.35 a share, versus $569 million, or $1.22 a share, in the same period a year earlier. Operating earnings, which exclude net realized investment gains and losses, were $666 million, or $1.41 a share, in the latest period.

 

Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) increases 2.33% to $18.89. The company reported first-quarter earnings of $866 million or 31 cents per share, up from the $772 million or 27 cents per share the company earned in the same quarter last year.

 

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) soars 2.39% to $30.79. The company posted a much better-than-expected first-quarter profit on Wednesday as higher pricing and volume pushed revenue up around the globe. Excluding costs from the 2009 acquisition of Rohm and restructuring, Dow earned 43 cents per share.
