Genarlow Wilson, the Georgia teenager who spent two years in prison for having consensual sex with a teenager, will attend Atlanta's Morehouse College beginning next week.
Wilson, 21, received a scholarship courtesy of the Tom Joyner Foundation, an educational non-profit organization founded by the nationally syndicated radio personality.
Wilson moves in to his dorm this weekend. He begins his academic career at the historically black college Wednesday as a part-time student with a class schedule consisting of freshman reading, freshman math and an English course. He plans to become a full-time student in the summer or fall.
In the fall, Wilson plans to play football for Morehouse as well.
The Tom Joyner Foundation will pay for Wilson's tuition, books and on-campus housing, but the actual amount of the scholarship was not disclosed.
Wilson was released from prison Oct. 26 after the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that his 10-year sentence for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl was "cruel and unusual punishment."
Wilson, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was convicted of felony aggravated child molestation. At the time, state law mandated a minimum 10-year sentence for the crime.
The State Legislature eventually changed the law to make such cases a misdemeanor when they involved teenagers close in age.
