Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico Deemed “Incident of National Significance” by U.S. Government

The oil spill resulting from a deadly rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico has been labeled an “incident of national significance” by the U.S. government, a designation that will now allow a more aggressive approach toward containing the slick.

An estimated 5,000 barrels of oil are now leaking into the Gulf and that oil is expected to begin washing ashore on Friday. That could happen sooner than predicted though as several forecasters have suggested weather could force the oil upon the coastline earlier.

Fears have already been expressed that the oil spill could become one of the biggest environmental disasters in decades as the slick now sits at 45 miles by 105 miles. The damage to the U.S coastline and wildlife could be unprecedented, surpassing the devastation left behind by the Exxon Valdez disaster off the coast of Alaska in 1989.

Efforts are now being made to produce a device that could cover the oil now rising to the surface and then pump that oil to container vessels but it could be weeks before that is actually ready. Attempts to slow the spill have been unsuccessful due in large part to the depth of the underwater well.

It was last week that the BP-operated Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank, leading to an emergency rescue of more than 140 workers. Eleven workers remain missing and are presumed dead.
