Belgium Takes First Step in Passing Law Banning Women from Wearing Full Islamic Face Veil in Public

The lower house of Belgium’s parliament has voted unanimously in favor of a law that would ban women from wearing full Islamic face veils in public, paving the way for a Senate vote that is expected to deliver similar results.

Supporters of the law have called it a victory for security as the ban would include buildings and grounds “for public use or to provide services.” In addition to being a security risk, the full face veil has been called a symbol of oppression and many supported the law on the grounds it would be a victory for women’s rights.

While the majority celebrated the vote detractors claimed the move would only mean that women who wore the veil would now refuse to go out in public and remain trapped inside their home.
