Filipino Monkey Started Naval Confrontation with Iran

The Pentagon is second guessing their initial belief that the Iranian military threatened American ships in the Strait of Hormuz.  The voice could have come from any one in the area with a radio.

One theory comes from a retired captain, Rick Hoffman.  Hoffman spent 17 years in the Gulf and often heard from a radio talker on several occasions.  The voice known as Filipino Monkey.

“For 25 years there’s been this mythical guy out there who, hour after hour, shouts obscenities and threats…He could be tied up pier side somewhere or he could be on the bridge of a merchant ship,” says Hoffman.

A retired Navy officer remembers the radio prankster well:
Ah yes, the Filipino Monkey…It’s not one person,...but a “radio call” passed around by many people...You start hearing it off the coast of North Africa, usually by Egypt, and then a lot more as you head through the Red Sea and (mostly) into the Gulf. It’s usually a fairly obscene, crudely humorous call and response.
