Sugar-Free Gum Can Cause Gastrointestinal Problems

According to a German study, the sweetener known as sorbitol used in sugar-free chewing gums can cause serious gastrointestinal problems.

Presented to the British Medical Journal on Friday, the doctors stated “Our cases demonstrate that sorbitol consumption can cause not only chronic diarrhea and functional bowel complaints but also considerable unintended weight loss -- about 20 percent of usual body weight.”

One male and one female studied in the case suffered chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and worrisome weight loss after they chewed 15 to 20 sticks of gum a day.  The subjects recovered from their symptoms when they stopped chewing the gum.
