Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant Marine who was found dead after being missing from Camp LeJeune, N.C. since December, died due to a head injury, according to coroners Monday.
Lauterbach, 20, died from "traumatic head injury due to blunt force trauma."
Her burned remains, along with those of her unborn child, over the weekend from a fire pit in the backyard of Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, a fellow personnel clerk at Camp Lejeune whom she had accused of rape.
In a note he left, Laurean admitted that he bury the remains, but claimed that Lauterbach committed suicide by cutting her own throat. Evidence suggests otherwise and that she was in fact murdered.
Laurean has been on the run, but police believe that he has stop running and has sought a hideout place recently.
The nationwide search for Laurean continued with the posting of a $25,000 reward for his capture and the posting of billboards.
A memorial service for Lauterbach was held in her hometown of Vandalia, OH Monday night. Over 1,000 mourners were in attendance at St. Christopher Catholic Church.
