U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said proximity talks involving Israelis and Palestinians are set to start next week with special envoy George Mitchell ready to travel to the Middle East in hopes of bridging the gap between the two sides and encouraging direct talks.
Talks have been stalled for more than a month since Israel announced it would move forward with construction in East Jerusalem, an issue Palestinians have refused to accept.
Palestinians have insisted East Jerusalem would be the capital of their future state yet Israel has maintained the contested area in which it is building, the settlement of Ramat Shlomo, is part of their country.
Israel’s refusal to back down led to Palestinian withdrawal from any peace talks, something the U.S. has been trying to facilitate for some time. Israel has reportedly agreed on a number of issues including relaxing the blockade on Gaza, releasing prisoners and even freezing construction in East Jerusalem but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to allow Palestinians to halt the construction all together.
