On March 7, 2007 Sunshine Lewis, Community Relations Director of Narconon of Georgia, a non-12 step drug rehab, joined the Bauder College Criminal Justice Program students and Dr. Eric W. Hickey to re-visit the scene of the crimes of the Atlanta Youth Murders committed in the 70s and 80s.
One of the original citizens who helped search for the bodies of the unfortunate victims was Mr. John Lewis, father of Sunshine Lewis. Like her father, Ms. Lewis remains interested in answering the question as to whether or not the actual killer has been brought to justice.
In the late 70’s and early 80’s Atlanta was shocked by a series of murders which killed two dozen children and young men. Known as the Atlanta Youth Murders, the case made national headlines and Atlanta was under intense media coverage until a suspect, Wayne Williams, was arrested, tried and convicted.
Joined by a TV crew and also by Dr. Eric W. Hickey (a forensic scientist with the new TV series Predators), Ms. and Gordy Weinand, Public Relations for Narconon, went with the students from Bauder College and looked at the areas where the bodies were found. The students from Bauder College were studying about forensic science and taking real-life tips on investigating a crime scene.
Sunshine Lewis duties’ not only include drug education for Atlanta youth, but also the excellent relations Narconon has with Bauder College, especially the Criminal Justice Program. Ms. Lewis explained, “Drugs are the cause of most of the crimes committed in this society and I think that it is important that those studying Criminal Justice have a good understanding of drug addiction and the consequences to individuals and the community.”
As it is Narconon of Georgia’s mission not only to rehabilitate addicts when they come in, but also to educate future generations on the dangers of drug abuse and ways to live drug free lives, Narconon of Georgia, a non-traditional drug free program, was on the front lines again. After visiting the grisly sites where the bodies where found, Sunshine and Gordy were interviewed by Dr. Hickey, and part of their message was that Narconon of Georgia is committed to help educate students not only on drug education but also on the moral precepts taught in the Narconon program.
Narconon of Georgia is a non-traditional drug abuse treatment program. Working with local community leaders and lawmakers to provide drug education and drug rehab are its primary objectives.
