Mona Lisa Identity Discovered
German researchers have discovered that the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is the portrait of the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant, Lisa Gherardini.
Gherardini has long since been suspected as the portrait, but rival theories cast a shadow of doubt about the subject’s identity. Some argued that the portrait was of one of Da Vinci’s lovers or even Da Vinci himself.
Heidelberg University Library said that the notes found in one of Da Vinci’s books in 1503 confirm the woman's mysterious identity.
The Mona Lisa that hangs in the Louvre museum in Paris, is also refered to as La Gioconda which means the happy or joyful woman in Italian. The title also implies the subject’s married name.
