Keeping his presidential hopes alive, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney took 39 percent of the vote in Michigan to take the Michigan primary on Tuesday night, nine percentage points ahead of Arizona Senator John McCain.
Romney’s victory further muddles the Republican race for the party’s nomination following Mike Huckabee’s victory in Iowa and McCain’s win in New Hampshire. All three candidates will continue the fight in South Carolina where McCain has been holding a slight lead over Huckabee.
Huckabee captured just 16 percent in Michigan to finish third while Texas Congressman Ron Paul continued to make waves in the GOP with a fourth place finish at 6 percent, finishing in front of Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani.
Thompson could see his fortunes turn as the focus moves to the south and the former senator from Tennessee will look to capitalize in familiar territory.
