Cloned Meat OK Says Food and Drug Administration
Cloned meat is acceptable for human consumption according to announcement made by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday.
Koren Lowrimore says, “I wouldn’t feed it to my kids or my family. I really don’t trust what science does with their food when they genetically engineer it.”
Dan Coover of SEK Genetics says “it’s been overdue. I’m glad to see it.” The company uses genetic engineering to clone animals, particularly valuable cows who exhibit superior genetics and produce superior quality meat. “It should help the producers make a product that is more uniform, more consistent, and hopefully healthier, less expensive.”
Coover expects cloned food to be on grocery shelves very soon, however, the Center for Food Safety says they are “concerned that the FDA did a bad job and that nobody really knows if cloned food is safe. There’s really no long-term studies about the health effects of it.”
Consumers say its unnatural, but Coover says “Cosmetic surgery is unnatural, driving around in cars is unnatural. If Henry Ford had asked people what they wanted, they wouldn’t have had automobiles, they’d have said faster horses.” He believes that consumers are just apprehensive about the new technology because they don’t yet understand them.
