FBI Turning Attention to Mexico in Search for Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean

The search for Marine Cpl. Cesar Lauren, wanted for the murder of pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, has shifted to his native Mexico according to the FBI.

On Tuesday officials found Laurean’s pickup truck at a motel near the Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina. A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, authorities now believe that Laurean fled the U.S. and crossed the southern border.

Newsom Summerlin, an FBI media representative, said “At this point in time we strongly suspect but have not confirmed that Laurean fled to Mexico.”

Lauterbach had accused Laurean of raping her early last year and in the summer she had a protective order taken out against him. The two continued to work near each other at Camp Lejeune but Lauterbach had told people that she didn’t feel threatened by Laurean.

In December Lauterbach, eight months pregnant at the time, disappeared. Her charred body was discovered buried in Laurean’s back yard last Friday, the same day Laurean fled.

According to a letter left by Laurean, and delivered to authorities by his wife, Lauterbach had committed suicide and he had buried her body in the yard. On Tuesday it was revealed that Lauterbach had died from blunt force trauma to the head.

FBI agents are currently working with Mexican officials to track Laurean.
