It’s been seven weeks since Marc Savard has put on a Boston Bruins jersey but the 11-year vet made the wait worthwhile as he blasted a slap shot past Brian Boucher nearly 14 minutes into overtime to lift the Boston Bruins past the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in Game 1 of their second round showdown.
Boston had built a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Steve Begin and Patrice Bergeron but the Flyers cut their deficit in half when Ryan Parent snuck the puck past Tuukka Rask to make it 2-1. The Bruins bounced back and regained their two-goal lead when Miroslav Satan scored on a power-play goal but four minutes later Chris Pronger scored on a power-play goal for the Flyers and the period ended 3-2.
The Bruins once again went up by two when David Krejci scored seven minutes into the third but the Flyers wouldn’t go away and Mike Richards cut Philly’s deficit to 4-3 and then Danny Briere evened the game at 4-4 with less than four minutes left and the two teams were heading to overtime.
In the OT Boucher was peppered by shots early and made a handful of incredible saves but Savard, coming back for the first time since suffering a concussion on March 7, was able to score the winner.
